Description
Sometimes a person gets lucky. While browsing at a yard sale several years ago I looked through a large cardboard box containing children's costume and dress-up clothes. There I found a beaded "Indian Princess" crown (Photo 1). A date, 1956, and the place, Omak, beaded onto the crown indicated it was intended for royalty, for an "Indian Princess" pageant instead of simply an outfit accessory (though the details of the pageant haven't yet been uncovered). Knowing little, at the time, about the history or Native views of crowns and those who wear them I saw this as an opportunity to learn about this aspect of Indian culture. Indian Princesses [1]
